Megaman x3 sega saturn12/28/2022 X5 (not available for Saturn sadly) was the first Mega Man game since MM2 to mess with the saving/checkpoints system, allowing you to save between fortress stages and having "continue" put you at the same checkpoint you go to when you lose a life, thus essentially giving you infinite lives. The stages in MM8 are extra long, and as I recall they have multiple checkpoints in each one to compensate for this. Saving, checkpoints, and lives in all three games work exactly the same as in MM1 through MM7, except that saving is done to memory instead of with passwords, and in X4 you can save after the first fortress stage (but not after the second or third fortress stages, for whatever reason). On top of that you have the ridiculous final boss, which requires as much persistence as skill to defeat. The timing of them is odd to say the least and a single screwup at any time and you have to start all over. I dare say 8 is the hardest of the three by virtue of the two jetboard sections alone, which are enough to send anyone to an insane asylum. Region,, Asia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Europe, Finland, France. X3 starts very hard, becomes astonishingly easy as you acquire upgrades, then slams you with a three-part final boss who puts most NES-era final bosses to shame for sheer difficulty. As a trade-off, though, the game is generally much easier with Zero, even letting you skip the fight with Colonel. It's certainly a challenging game through and through but I can't think of any parts that are completely unreasonable, except maybe doing the teleport hatches with Zero, since he can't exploit the weaknesses of some of the bosses. Mega Man 8 was mostly fun the first time but I hesitate to put it in a second time for reasons covered in the below paragraph. I'll add that I never get tired of replaying Mega Man X4 - I've already gone through twice with each character. Totally agree with every last thing Derek has said here.
